To Gosain , today most of the organizations are implementing the most insidious and persistent information system and it is referred to as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. The inception of ERP systems have produced a worldwide multi-billion dollar supplier and consulting industry. Finney and Corbett say that organizations to remain competitive use ERP that connects the information supplied by each department into a common entity. ERP systems are designed to deal with the problem of fragmentation as they incorporate and modernize internal processes by providing a suite of software modules that cover all functional areas of a business. Ross and Vitale say that with the growing need to have an integrated face of organization for global customers, to be able to rapidly respond to demands of customers and to find an economic of scale; organizations are reconsidering the potentials of information technology. Many organizations are determined to replace the legacy system forming the base of the information system potentials with enterprise resource planning systems (ERPs). Ross and Vitale say ERP systems replace the distinct transaction processing systems of an organization with a single and integrated system that represents the new interdependencies among the functional units of an organization. ERP systems offer to fortifying IT infrastructures and facilitating global business process integration, but implementation of the ERP systems has proven to be very costly, and the returns of implementation seems to be indefinable.
Boudreau and Robey explains that ERP systems are such software package of complex technology that is designed to incorporate all major business process such as human resource management, financial administration and supply chain management. Since ERP systems are designed for the purpose to integrate organizational functions for business data and process, they allow alteration and adjustment after the adoption of business rules of organizations are configured in the software. ERP software packages are, in contrast to modifiable software, inflexible after they are configured and implemented. Dezdar & Sulaiman has explained ERP systems as business software that facilitates an organization to organize the use of resources such as materials, human resources, finance and others efficiently and effectively by offering an integrated solution for the information-processing requests, by process-oriented view consistent within the company.
