In 1980 it was estimated that the total cost of healthcare was 246 billion dollars in the United States, which at that time was only approximately nine percent of the gross national product. (Pronk, 2009) As advancements in medicine have taken place and healthcare costs have risen, we as a nation are a long way from where we were in 1980. In comparison, “in 2006, health care expenditures in the United States were approximately 2.16 trillion (16.2 percent of the Gross Domestic Product)”. (Hahn, 2007) While the overall dollar number obviously went up, inflation has to be considered. However, even with inflation, the percentage of the government spending on healthcare rose over seven percent. Some may say that the increase has risen exponentially with inflation, time, and rise in population, but spending over fifteen percent of the total national budget on healthcare is quite significant. The burden of healthcare costs have been placed on employers that provide healthcare insurance to its employees and in an ever increasing trend, those costs are being passed to the employees or individuals themselves. In order to begin to curb these costs, promote a healthier lifestyle, and make our nation an overall healthier place, companies are turning to worksite wellness promotion plans.

Lapole Enterprises LLC is a for profit organization based out of Cincinnati Ohio that serves professional athletes from all over the United States, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Our mission is to provide information and to help make the best financial decisions for professional athletes from all professional sports including but not limited to Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, and the National Hockey League. The information presented herein will include aspects of best practices, a needs assessment, objectives, elements of the comprehensive wellness program, health risk appraisal, components of a safe worksite, legal considerations, informed consent, policies and procedures, personnel needed for the wellness program, accreditation issues, how to measure employee productivity, motivating the employees, the return on investment, creating a healthy workplace, and evaluating the wellness program.
