Oscar Nomination To: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science Steven Spielberg’s film, Jurassic Park, should win the award at the Academy Award for the Best Picture Category as it truly is the best in its category. The film has a thrilling plot and the storyline contains incredible suspense and extreme intrigue. The following shall be a motivation in which the explanation to this award shall be shown and explained in detail.
The themes of the film included money being more important than life, as the characters did not fully understand the dangers of the park and that people were being killed by the animals in the park. A theme of disloyalty is evident in the film as Dennis Nedry is sabotaging the security system of the park and stealing the embryos of the dinosaurs. A theme of science versus ethical issues is seen throughout the film as the researchers feel the need to enhance the knowledge of dinosaurs and recreate them while Ian Malcom voices his opinion about the ethical issues involved. Malcom feels that it is unethical to recreate the dinosaurs and that they became extinct for a reason.
The characters were well cast, especially Ian Malcom as he has an intellectual air about him and has good morals in terms of the ethical issues involved in the recreation of dinosaurs. The children suited their part as they provided innocence to the film and showed their talent in their acting. The director of the film, Steven Spielberg, executed the film with true talent. There was no confusion caused during the viewing of the film.
The special effects of the film enabled it to become more than just another film; it brought excitement to the film as one would never be able to imagine dinosaurs by oneself. The creation of the dinosaurs was extremely realistic and was truly remarkable. Their colours were earthy and they suited the colours of the area.
In the scene where the visitors to the park arrive in a helicopter, an extreme long shot can be seen. The Camera moves behind the helicopter and one can see the locale, the jagged edges of the island and the vast, rough sea. It has a great effect as an establishing shot as it is not a usual aerial view of the area. One can see the island from the helicopter’s height and how one would see it from the people’s point of view. The opening scene of the film is a long shot as the dinosaur is in the cage on the platform. This allows one to visualize everything, including the people, and get a general view of the situation. The lighting comes from the lights of the gate and gives a mysterious and dark mood to the scene.
More seriously, however, a medium shot is used as Ian is talking to the other characters. It is an over the shoulder shot and is effective as he is the voice of all people; he voices the opinion of the public. The viewer can see the other characters all looking at him as he voices his opinion and the characters he is talking to are all in medium shot from Ian.
An example of a close up shot is established in the first scene as the dinosaur is in the cage looking out at the people. The game ranger’s head is the close up from the dinosaur’s perspective. This is very effective as it allows the viewer to get different perspectives of the characters and creates a mysterious mood as to what is in the cage. An example of an extreme close up comes across as Dennis Nedry is busy collecting the DNA of the various dinosaurs. The camera hones in on the names of the dinosaurs which are effective as one would like to know the names of the dinosaurs that he is collecting. It allows the viewer to gain knowledge on what the man is doing and what he is doing it with.
Focusing on the angles of the camera, a bird’s-eye view angle may be seen as the Velociraptor is fed a cow. As the gate above the cage opens up, the angle is revealed from above the cow to below into the plant-filled cage. It creates an all knowing perspective for the spectator which is effective and one cannot see the dinosaur which creates suspense and fear for a bystander, A high angle is seen as the helicopter is flying through the gorge. The angle of the camera is above the helicopter yet it is not a bird’s eye view. This is different yet effective as it is not a usual, all-knowing angle from directly above. It gives a unique perspective of the scene yet still allows one to see everything.
